Pure Strength Tips
While developing a strong core is important for racquet sports players, it is abolutely essential for squash players. These tips will help you get the most out of Pure Strength progams at the Southland Leisure Centre.
Buddy Up – It is easier to attend regularly if you go with a friend. Find out when other Southland Squash Club members are going and go with them. Or find a friend and go together.
Modify – All instructors offer alternatives and modifications to each and every exercise in Pure Strength programs. Squash players who are new to Pure Strength should note these modifications very carefully.
If you are just getting back into shape, don’t push too hard by taking on too much. Listen to your body and modify each exercise accordingly. As your overall fitness level improves, you will be able to add more weight and push a little harder.
Count Your Reps – The number of reps in each Pure Strength exercise varies from 8 to 12. Some instructors lose track of the reps and end up doing 14 or 15.
Don’t feel pressured to follow along with the super-fit people in the group who think nothing of doing long sets with multiple reps. If 8 reps are right for you, stop at 8. If 11 is right, stop at 11.
Know the Cycle
Pure Strength is taught on a cycle that varies throughout the calendar year. Some parts of the cycle are more demanding than others. Talk to your program leaders and find out where they are in the cycle.
If you are having trouble coping with the pace of the exercises, ask what you can do to modify things and improve your individual experience.
Know Your Leader
Regular participants in Pure Strength will come to know the individual characteristics of each program leader.
Some program leaders require a full combination of strength, endurance, balance and coordination. Others focus on strength and endurance while requiring only a small amount of balance and coordination.
Some like to have the music turned up loud; some like to have it playing quietly in the background. Some give very explicit instructions; some give very few instructions.
Each Pure Strength program leader is different. It is important, therefore, to try out the various leaders and determine which are best suited for your needs. Doing this will ensure that you enjoy Pure Strength and continue coming regularly.
